This Specialized Skid Steer Auger Bit Is the Next-Best Thing to a Stump Grinder
Posted by Lee Padgett on 29th Nov 2024
You know what’s one thing that many skid steer auger attachments are used for? Planting trees. To that point, we sell wide, tree-planting bits that are specifically designed to dig holes wide enough for root balls.
But what’s one thing that a skid steer auger drive conventionally can’t do? Dig out old stumps - which is unfortunate, because orchards and tree farms understandably will have an occasional need to do just that.
Now, we sell skid steer attachments that are specifically designed for easy compatibility with most major makes and models of skid steers, so you can probably drop your auger drive off your skid steer and outfit your machine with one of our stump buckets or stump grinders.
But you don’t need to do that, whether or not you have a stump to grind. You can use the very auger drive unit you have on your skid steer, with a specialized skid steer auger bit that will get the job done.
Enter Spartan Equipment Stump Planer Bits
Most skid steer auger bits are designed to dig holes, but our skid steer planer bits are designed for one thing and one thing only - making quick, short work of gnarled stumps.
Granted, a stump bucket or grinder is a great attachment and will also get the job done, but if you don’t have one of these, a skid steer auger drive with a stump planer bit is a close second.
Our stump planer bits consist of three tool-steel cutting blades and a starter tip. All of these components can be sharpened or replaced as needed throughout the life of the tool.
Use is simple as can be; just position the stump planer over the stump you wish to remove and drive it downward. The pilot starter tip feeds the auger all the way through the stump, pulling it down, ensuring even grinding and preventing the bit from walking.
Moreover, the cutters have guides on the trailing edges that eliminate jumping back out of the hole, and the bit is designed so as not to overload itself and not to get stuck as it works. Binding can be a problem with some bits but it tends not to be with ours.
In fact, in one capacity, these stump planer bits are actually better than dedicated stump grinders. Since they can reach down 18 inches, they can get deeper than most stump grinders can, ensuring that the entire stump is removed. Auger extensions can even be used if the stump goes deeper than these can reach. There’s also the fact that they liberate you from needing to hire another contractor for the job. You just need the right skid steer auger bits.
Now, one thing you might be thinking is that these bits are too narrow to grind up a whole stump. That may be true in some instances, since they have a cutting width of only 10 to 14 inches.
But all you need to do to grind up a wider stump is work the bit back out of the hole, reposition it so that it overlaps with the previous flight, and start again. In that fashion, stumps of nearly any size can be ground up in situ.
We just have two notes: when using these specialized skid steer auger bits, make sure your angle of attack is perfectly vertical and straight - do not attempt to enter from an angle. Also, don’t rush the job. Let the cutting blades work at their own pace.
Our stump planer bits are available in two cutting diameters, 10 and 14 inches, and with 2 and 2.56 inch round and hex collars.
Though they are highly specialized, if you already have a skid steer auger drive, and routinely need to remove stumps, it’s only a matter of time before these bits pay for themselves. So equipped with them, you will no longer need to hire a contractor or rent another attachment to get rid of pesky stumps.
Like our other skid steer attachments, our auger drives are designed for compatibility with most major makes and models of skid steers. And, like our other skid steer attachments, they are made in the United States with American steel only, never cheap Chinese imports.
