Skid Steer Auger Bits

Frequently Asked Questions about our Skid Steer Auger Bits

1. What is the actual purpose of a rock/frost bit?
A rock or frost bit is designed to help in drilling through shaley or tightly packed rock formations such as platelet shale and red pan shale, which are common in the southern regions of the United States. Its primary function is to displace, crack, or fracture these materials rather than to drill through solid rock.

2. Can I drill through solid rock with a rock bit?
Not ideally. Rock bits are not intended for drilling through solid rock. Most skid steer auger attachments don’t provide enough torque to effectively penetrate solid rock. While the bullet teeth on a rock-facing bit can technically get through rock, the process would be extremely slow and inefficient. For drilling through solid rock, a core drill bit is recommended.

3. How can I extend the life of my rock bit?
To extend the life of your bit, ensure it spins continuously so that the wear is distributed evenly around the rotation of the carbide facing tip. If the bit does not rotate properly, the tips will wear unevenly and prematurely on one side, limiting the effectiveness and lifespan of the bit.

4. Are there any tips for making it easier to replace the bullet teeth?
Yes. Use a bullet tooth puller, which is a pry tool designed to make it easier to remove the bullet tooth from its holder and to insert a new one. The tool features a small notch that assists in prying the tooth out and also helps drive it back in.
